Simple Valentine’s Day Toddler Food

The more I look on Pinterest, the more I see cute ideas for Valentine’s Day treats to make for children. If you’re the average mom, you’re pretty busy juggling more than one child, a job (or two), and a household to keep together. While a homemade pop tart with a cut out spot for a heart shaped strawberry is super cute, not many of us have time to whip that up during our hectic day.

I thought I’d share a super EASY idea that I do for my toddler quite often (not just Valentine’s Day). When she learned her shapes, I would start making anything I could into shapes. It made it fun, was a good review of the shapes, and let’s face it, it made her eat it! Anything as simple as a whole sandwich being a square, then you cut it diagonal and it’s two triangles, or cut it down the center and it’s two rectangles. Once that got boring, I started using cookie cutters to make stars and hearts. She loves it.

Back to the main idea…. Raise your hand if your child likes pizza!!! This is so simple, cute, and much healthier than normal pizza. Simply take a piece of bread, any kind you choose (White, wheat, multigrain, gluten free, whatever your little heart [You like that, don’t you?] desires. I always suggest a bread that has no high fructose corn syrup). You can use a cookie cutter or a knife to cut out a heart shape. Press down the center of the bread with your fingers to create a border around the heart (this helps to keep the sauce in place). Then put a thin layer of pizza sauce (marinara sauce works fine too). And top with whatever you’d like! This is also a great way to get some veggies in if your child doesn’t like them. Bake it in the oven at 350 for about 5 minutes or so, or until the cheese (if you used it) melts. Voila. Simple heart shaped pizza. Enjoy!
